Presentations of the 2nd EUROCLIMA Workshop, a project of the European Commission against climate change in Latin America, are available online. Held from October 22-25 at the Northeastern Regional Center of the National Institute for Space Research (CRN/INPE), in Natal (RN), Brazil, the workshop was organized in partnership with the Laboratory of Satellite Images Analysis and Processing (LAPIS) of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL). The presentations can be downloaded here.

To discuss the effects of desertification, land degradation and drought in Latin America, the workshop has brought together participants from 16 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, as well as representatives of the United Nations and UNESCO.

Among the activities, on October 22 and 23 was conducted a workshop on TerraMA2, an open source computing platform developed by INPE for any user interested in developing his/her own operating system of environmental risks. Twenty four researchers attended this course organized by Humberto Barbosa, coordinator of LAPIS, and Eymar Lopes, of INPE's Image Processing Division.

On October 24 and 25 were presented and discussed historical environmental data from each country, the current scenario, and recent and future environmental management actions.

"This meeting was like a training platform to foster regional networking in Latin America. The aim is to bring together scientific research and practical application of methodologies to monitor and mitigate desertification, land degradation and drought in the region," said Neusa Paes Leme, a researcher of CRN/INPE and one of the workshop organizers, which also had Paulo Barbosa, of the European Commission, and Humberto Barbosa, of LAPIS/UFAL as organizers.

Also broadcasted live online, the event registered 650 internet users’ attendees.
