TerraView: A Course on INPE’s
Software for Social Policies

The Metropolitan Studies Center (CEM), of São Paulo, is offering GIS courses with the free software TerraView Social Policy, developed by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The course will last 20 hours and will be conducted periodically by CEM. The next training will be on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of December.

The TerraView Social Policy, a software existent to make analysis and space interpretations of social reality of urban areas, is one of the results of the Space Programme along with INPE’ Society, which provides space technology tools on service of a better life quality of the Brazilian people.

The CEM an INPE’s partner, is one of the Research, Innovation and diffusion centers (Cepid) of FAPESP from São Paulo. About 8 years more than 680 professionals of areas like Education and housing took part of the GIS courses focused on social policies. The objective is to support non specialist users mainly those interested on social policies, like education, health, housing and income transaction from TerraView software.

In this course sponsored by CEM, the participants get to know the software basic functions and get ready to explore the many possibilities of the presentation itself as well the space analysis of social, economical, and demographic data.

The course topics are based on GIS groundwork introduction, program structure, basic analysis tools, manipulation of attribute tables, geographic operations and address geocoding. At the end of the training, participants can view, search and analyze geographic and tabular data, and create maps and graphs with cartographic quality.
